Kris Weems made three 3-pointers as No. 17 Stanford opened the second half with a 20-5 surge and went on to a 78-67 victory over Washington Thursday night in Stanford, Calif.

Brevin Knight’s 26 points, including 17 in the second half, led the Cardinal (12-3, 5-2 Pac-10). Tim Young added 20 points and Weems finished with 11 as the Cardinal rebounded from last Saturday’s 86-77 loss at Oregon State by beating Washington for the 10th time in their last 11 games at Maples Pavilion.

The Huskies (10-4, 3-3), who saw their three-game winning streak snapped, again struggled on the road, falling to 3-4 away from home.

Jamie Booker’s 20 points led Washington. Mark Sanford, who entered averaging 20.2 points and nine rebounds in conference games, was held to 15 points and five rebounds.

“You have to give credit to Stanford for the two runs in the second half. That was the difference in the game,” UW coach Bob Bender said.

In Los Angeles, J.R. Henderson, benched as a starter for arguing with coach Steve Lavin in practice a day earlier, scored a season-high 24 points as the Bruins held off the Trojans.

The Bruins (11-4, 6-1 Pac-10), who retained sole possession of first place, snapped a seven-game winning streak at the Sports Arena for USC (9-6, 4-3).

Henderson, replaced by senior Bob Myers, objected to something Lavin said and was kicked out of practice. He didn’t play for the first 5:18.

Reserve Kris Johnson added 19 points and Charles O’Bannon scored 18 for the Bruins, who have won four straight and 10 of their last 12.

The game started with some fireworks when Johnson earned a technical foul and Gary Williams of USC a personal when they went nose-to-nose in the game’s first 5 minutes. Stais Boseman’s three-point play drew the Trojans within four points with 2:25 to play, but they got no closer.
