Locke Requests More Disaster Aid

From Staff And Wire Reports

Gov. Gary Locke on Saturday requested federal disaster aid for 34 more counties in Washington to repair damage to public property caused by winter storms.

“Estimated damage to public facilities and roads in the state from the December and January storms now stands at $160 million,” said Diane Offord, who is coordinating disaster relief for the state.

The governor’s latest request seeks aid for Adams, Asotin, Benton, Chelan, Clallam, Clark, Columbia, Cowlitz, Ferry, Garfield, Grant, Grays Harbor, Island, Jefferson, Kitsap, Kittitas, Klickitat, Lewis, Lincoln, Mason, Okanogan, Pacific, Pend Oreille, Pierce, San Juan, Skagit, Skamania, Spokane, Stevens, Thurston, Walla Walla, Whatcom, Whitman and Yakima counties.

Snohomish and King counties were declared federal disaster areas on Jan. 17 by President Clinton.

Offord said the state may submit additional requests for federal aid.

On Friday, the state asked for federal disaster aid for individuals and businesses with uninsured losses in 12 counties.
