Sonics Rout Warriors Behind Payton’s 26
Gary Payton had 26 points, including six 3-pointers, and three teammates scored 14 each as the Seattle SuperSonics never trailed in a 111-86 win Wednesday night over Golden State.
Detlef Schrempf, Hersey Hawkins and Craig Ehlo each scored 14 for the Sonics, who scored the first 10 points of the game and led 19-4 after 8 minutes.
Seattle had an 18-point margin by the end of the first quarter and led by as many as 36 points in the fourth period.
Chris Mullin had 26 points for Golden State, which has lost eight straight to Seattle.
All-Stars Latrell Sprewell of Golden State and Shawn Kemp of Seattle failed to start for the first time this season. Sprewell got lost driving to San Jose Arena, and Kemp was disciplined for being late to a practice.
Sprewell missed the opening 3-1/2 minutes of the game. He told team officials a traffic accident closed down the highway he usually takes to the arena, so he tried other routes and headed toward Los Angeles by mistake.
Kemp, who also was fined an undisclosed amount for being late to Tuesday’s practice, entered the game with 4:06 left in the first quarter and Seattle leading 17-4. He finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds in 25 minutes. SuperSonics 111, Warriors 86
