Hints From Heloise

King Features Syndicate

Dear Heloise: Please help! I have boys ages 3 and 2. They got hold of some crayons and wrote on my bedroom furniture that is a light-colored wood. How do I clean it up? - Renee Patel, Houston

For all parents with young artists who found a “canvas,” we took this question to a leading manufacturer of crayons to get the best information we could. They have done numerous tests on removing crayon marks from woodwork. The following is what they suggest, so take heed.

Spray the marks with a multipurpose spray lubricant used for squeaks (a.k.a. car-part lubricant); just make sure the furniture has a good finish. Then wipe, using a clean, soft white cloth. For stubborn marks, you may have to repeat the steps.

If there is a residue left behind from the lubricant, add a drop or two of mild liquid dishwashing soap to a cup of water. Dampen a sponge with the solution and squeeze out very well, then, working in a circular motion, remove the residue. Be sure to rinse with a lightly moistened sponge and dry with a clean cloth.

Good luck, and hugs to your young Picassos. - Heloise
