Stallions, Cda Roll Into Finals

The Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen and Great Falls, Mont., Stallions will meet at Seafirst Stadium in today’s 2 p.m. championship game of the Spokane AAA American Legion Fourth of July baseball tournament.

The Stallions (4-1) earned their way into the title game Saturday with a 5-4 win over Post Falls’ Prairie Cardinals at Gonzaga University’s August/A.R.T. Stadium.

Josh Mann stroked a run-scoring single for the winners, who also got a seven-hit, six-strikeout pitching performance from Dusty Olsen.

Coeur d’Alene (4-1) advanced to the finals by edging the Spokane Valley Cannons 9-8 and thumping the Spokane Royals 19-4 at Shadle Park’s Jackson Field.

In their win over the Cannons, the Lumbermen got two hits each from Jim Rupp, Scott Moglia, Andy Gare and Casey Hoorelbeke. They then pounded out 20 hits, including four by Gare, in their rout of the Royals, who managed only six hits off winning pitcher Aaron Cohen.

Today’s 11 a.m. consolation game at Seafirst Stadium will pit the Prairie Cardinals against the Billings Royals. Both teams are 3-2.

In other games Saturday at Jackson field, the Royals clobbered the Cannons 9-1 behind the two-hit pitching of Greg Colburn and Chad Lujan’s three RBIs, the Spokane Blue Devils got home runs from Eric Hayden and Abe Nisbet to thump the Northco Angels 12-4, and the Royals rolled past the Angels 13-3 as Lujan drove in three runs with a pair of doubles and two singles.

In other action at GU, Brett DeBoer belted a three-run homer and a pair of singles in leading the Cardinals past the Vancouver Royals 7-5, but the Royals came back to stomp the Spokane Northstars 17-9 behind Adam Stokey’s four hits and five RBIs.

In the two games played at Seafirst Stadium, El Segundo, Calif., beat the Spokane Northstars 12-4, but lost to the Browne’s Mountain Bandits 3-0.

No-hitter saves Red Sox

Former Whitworth ace Sam Fleming pitched a no-hitter and teammate Matt Armitage belted a 3-run seventh-inning homer as the Spokane Red Sox defeated the Yakima Chiefs 8-0 in the second game of a Pacific International League baseball doubleheader at Whitworth Yakima, which currently leads the PIL, won the opener 14-2.

Braves to hold tryouts

The Atlanta Braves will hold an open baseball tryout camp Wednesday at 9 a.m. at North Idaho College. Players under the age of 25 are encouraged to attend.

Miller stars in All-American Bowl

Lakewood’s Drew Miller threw two touchdown passes as the West beat the East 20-17 in the second National High School All-American Bowl in Palm Gardens, Fla.

Miller, a Brigham Young recruit, had scoring passes of 42 and 9 yards to Rod Perry Jr. of Irvine, Calif., and also had a 62-yard completion to Malaefou MacKenzie of Mission Viejo, Calif.

The game, staged by U.S. Amateur Sports of Palm Beach Gardens, drew 70 of the top high school football players as compiled by Parade and Street & Smith magazines, USA Today and ESPN.

Stars roll in U-11 tourney

Emily Westerberg and Julie Hinkemeyer each scored eight points and pulled down 10 rebounds as the Spokane Stars defeated the Alaska Ice Jammers 45-25 in the first round of an U-11 girls basketball tournament in Minneapolis. Angie Clift added six assists for the winners.
