Schmick Tables Her Career

Andee Schmick, who played her freshman year at Eastern Washington University last season, is transferring to Washington State University and putting her basketball career on hold.

“I hate to sound like a cliche, but I’m taking a year off and focusing on my studies,” said Schmick, an Endicott resident, who’s most remembered for playing on St. John-Endicott’s 1996 undefeated State B championship team.

Schmick said, after her undergraduate studies, she plans to pursue a masters degree in speech therapy/audiology.

Schmick said she’ll have the option of walking on with the Cougars her junior year, but, “I thought about it and it doesn’t interest me. I’m done for a year at least, but I want to leave all doors open.”

During her freshman year at EWU, the 5-foot-9 guard averaged 5.2 points, shooting 40 of 110 from the floor, in 17 minutes per game.

The Eagles finished 5-21 overall, 2-14 in the Big Sky Conference. Since then, head coach Heidi VanDerveer has become an assistant coach with the WNBA Sacramento Monarchs and EWU assistant Karen Middleton has taken a job as an assistant coach at Stanford.

Jocelyn Pfeifer, formerly an Eastern assistant, has been named head coach. Anna West, a former Southern Utah and Montana State assistant, will assist Pfeifer.

“Heidi and Karen were not the reason why I wouldn’t have stayed if they had stayed. Not at all,” Schmick said. “And Jocelyn and Anna will do a great job. They’re very, very capable.”
