Redman Leads Big Apple

Compiled From Wire Services

Michele Redman survived the 100-degree heat and a hot nine holes from Cindy Schreyer to hold onto the lead midway through the JAL Big Apple Classic in New Rochelle, N.Y.

Redman finished 36 holes in 11-under 131, just a shot off the tournament record held by Juli Inkster and Betsy King. Schreyer, looking for her first LPGA victory since 1993, shot a 31 for the opening nine, one stroke off the tournament mark.

Don Pooley, who hasn’t won on the PGA Tour in 10 years, started his second round with three birdies and went on to take a share of the lead at the Deposit Guaranty Golf Classic in Madison, Miss.

Pooley and Steve Jurgensen were at 11-under par 133 after two rounds at Annandale Golf Club. They were a stroke ahead of David Ogrin and Steve Lowery. Former Pullman resident Kirk Triplett shot a 69 and is 5 under at 139.

Jimmy Powell matched the tournament record with an 8-under-par 64, including seven birdies in an eight-hole stretch, for a one-stroke lead over Hale Irwin and Larry Gilbert after the first day of the 54-hole Burnet Senior Classic in Coon Rapids, Minn.

Tim Clark, who was born in South Africa, and Ryuji Imada, a native of Japan, advanced to today’s U.S. Amateur Public Links championship in Lexington, Ky.

John Daly, who said his abrupt departure from the U.S. Open five weeks ago was due to exhaustion, will make his tour comeback next week at the Greater Hartford Open. During his layoff, he completed a five-day stay at a Florida sports psychology and nutrition center.

Former Stanford golf All-American Martha Freitag has been named women’s golf coach at Boise State University.
