Louisville’s women’s volleyball coach, Leonid Yelin, was suspended without pay and assistant Mitzy Donhoff was fired for NCAA rules violations which university president John Shumaker called the worst in the school’s history.

The two players involved in the violations have been declared ineligible and the team will forfeit all its 1996 victories.

Shumaker said coaches arranged for a player’s tuition to be paid, purchased textbooks for the player and arranged for free off-campus housing for the athlete.

Carl Lewis, winner of nine Olympic gold medals and a record eight world championship golds, will run his last competitive race Aug. 26 at Berlin, a 400-meter relay with his Santa Monica Track Club teammates.

“He will do some things (races) for charity next year,” said his coach, Tom Tellez, “but that’s all. He won’t compete. He’s getting tired of it all.”

Marathoner Pablo Sierra was suspended by the Spanish federation for six months after accusing his teammates, including world champion Martin Fiz, of using banned drugs.
