Hints From Heloise

King Features Syndicate

Dear Heloise: Here is a good use for the metal frame in a discarded lampshade. I used two large ones after pulling the silk off the shades.

In mid-April I placed them on the ground (each anchored by two small sticks on the inside of opposite ends of the rim) over growing peony shoots and now the plants are in full leaf with many buds. Great protection from wind and rain.

My other peonies had to be staked and tied with cords. Next year, more cages (I hope). - M. Freyberger, Chatham N.J.

Dear Heloise: My hint is for cat owners. I find that by placing a doormat (the kind used outside a door) in front of the litter box, the excess litter will be caught in the tufted mat.

I keep a trash can near the litter box and gently shake the mat into the trash can. - Mrs. Addie Hubble, Dublin, Va.

Dear Heloise: I keep a small pocket-size telephone book just for fax numbers next to the fax machine. It sure saves a lot of trips to my main telephone directory at the other end of the house.

Thank you for your wonderful columns and books! - Cathy Nelson, San Juan Capistrano, Calif.
