The former colleague of UI President Robert Hoover’s will begin his new job July 1. The provost oversees all academic departments and is second in command to the president.

“Brian is an efficient administrator …,” Hoover said Monday. “He will be a welcome member of the team.”

Pitcher was chosen from about 75 candidates. He has worked at Utah State since 1978 in a variety of positions, including dean, associate dean, associate provost and director of the international education program.

He is credited with having helped strengthen the general education and honors programs and worked to expand internship, study abroad and cooperative education opportunities for students.

He helped create and expand Western American studies and women’s studies programs and coordinated planning for a renewed emphasis on international education at Utah State.

Pitcher earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in sociology from Brigham Young University in 1973 and 1974, respectively. He received a doctorate in sociology from the University of Arizona in 1978.
