Esta Fletcher St. Maries

Memorial service for Esta B. Fletcher, 90, will be today at 11 a.m. at the Community Presbyterian Church in St. Maries. Yates-Hodge Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Fletcher, who was born in Johnson, Wash., died Monday.

He graduated from St. Maries High School in 1926 and worked at the Milwaukee Mill before driving a mail route between St. Maries and Tekoa, Wash.

Mr. Fletcher later worked in the timber industry while continuing to farm, ranch and sell eggs.

He worked for Marquardt-Yarber Lumber Mill and Edwards Lumber before working for Dohrmans Mill in Tensed, Idaho.

Mr. Fletcher also operated a tree farm. He retired in 1986.

He was a member of the St. Maries Masonic Lodge, the Order of the Eastern Star, the Benewah Valley Association, the American Association of Retired Persons and the St. Maries and Tensed Granges.

Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Lucille; a son, Bill Fletcher of St. Maries; two daughters, Marilyn Fletcher and Carol Hughes, both of California; a sister, Alta Goodrich of Spokane; and 10 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

Patricia Fray Spokane

Vigil service for F. Patricia Fray, a 64-year Spokane resident, will be at 8 p.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Funeral Mass is planned for 10 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mrs. Fray, 76, died May 23. She was born in Spokane.

In 1954 she married Phillip Fray in Coeur d’Alene.

Mrs. Fray had worked as a welder in the Portland shipyards during World War II, and later operated a home business making custom draperies, and power sewing machine skills to refugees.

She was a member of the Brain Injury Foundation of Washington, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, the Sumner Washington Historical Society and Our Lady of Fatima Parish.

Mrs. Fray is survived by her husband; three sons, David and Kevin of Spokane, and Shawn of Ferndale, Wash.; three daughters, Lucy and Janet of Kent, Wash., and Susan of California; a brother, Frank Cook of Normandy Park, Wash.; two sisters, Virginia Cook of Quincy, Wash., and Gwen Yoke of Colbert; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Jack Englesby Spokane

Service for Jack D. Englesby, 76, is planned for 10 a.m. today at the Heritage Funeral Home. Burial will be at the Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mr. Englesby, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Wednesday.

He had served in the Army during World War II and worked as a switchman for Great Northern Railroad from 1940 until 1964.

He is survived by two sons, Terry and Dennis; two sisters, Dorothy Davis of Veradale and Donna Young of Spokane.

Henry ‘Hans’ Gerlock Lind, Wash.

Service for Henry “Hans” Gerlock, 80, will be at 11 a.m. today at the Good Hope Lutheran Church in Lind. Service and vault burial will follow at the Lind Cemetery. Danekas Funeral Home in Ritzville, Wash., is in charge of funeral arrangements. Mr. Gerlock died Wednesday.

He was born in Ritzville and was a 62-year Lind resident.

In the early 1920s his family moved to Warden, Wash., where he attended school. In 1935 he moved to Lind where he worked and farmed for Godfrey Meilke.

He served in the Army during World War II.

In 1944 he married Elsie “Gerry” Scheeler in Lind.

Mr. Gerlock had worked for Krehbiel Motors and later as a truck driver and warehouse superintendent for Union Elevators. He retired in 1982.

He was a member of Good Hope Lutheran Church in Lind, the Lind American Legion Post and the Lind Active Club.

He and his wife moved to Ritzville in January.

Mr. Gerlock is survived by his wife; four sisters, Helen Ottmar and Evelyn Reed, both of Spokane, Pauline Starkel of Tacoma, and Mary Jeske of Moses Lake.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Good Hope Lutheran Church or to the American Cancer Society.

Robert Cary Smith Spokane

Memorial service for Robert Cary Smith, a lifetime Spokane resident, will be at 2 p.m. today at St. Paul United Methodist Church. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Smith, 74, died Saturday.

He graduated from North Central High School and attended Washington State University.

He served in the Navy during World War II on the USS Yorktown in the Pacific Theater.

Mr. Smith graduated from the University of Idaho with a degree in economics and business and later worked as an underwriter for California Western States Life Insurance/American General.

He was a member of Life Underwriters Association, the University of Idaho Vandal Boosters and Tau Kappa Epsilon at Washington State University.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 53 years, Virginia; a son, Craig Cary Smith, and a daughter, Kaye Smith Aucutt, both of Spokane; a sister, Marseline Smith Dressel; and three grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the North Central Alumni Scholarship Fund.

James Eaton Spokane

Funeral Mass for James F. Eaton, 86, will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Eaton, a longtime Spokane resident, died Monday.

He was born in Portland.

He graduated from Hillyard High School and attended Washington State University.

Mr. Eaton worked as a civil engineer for the Navy in Kodiak, Alaska, and later worked as a professional engineer with the Department of Transportation.

He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish, Spokane Radio Amateurs and the Moose Lodge.

Mr. Eaton is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ruth; two daughters, Jean Foust of Pasco, and Marie Eaton of Spokane; and five grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Poor Clare Nuns.

Tibor Ertl Spokane

Visitation for Tibor Ertl, 73, will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North. Vigil service will follow at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Funeral Mass is planned for 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Thomas More Catholic Church. Burial will be at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mr. Ertl, who was born in Hungary, died Monday.

He attended high school in Hungary and later continued his education in San Gabriel, Calif.

In 1949 he married Maria Magdalena, in Hungary.

He owned Tibor’s Jewelry in Hungary, from 1947 to 1956 and in 1958 opened Tibor’s Jewelry in Hammond, Ind. In 1973 he moved to Alhambra, Calif., where he also operated a jewelry store until he retired in 1981.

He moved to Spokane in 1983 from Pasadena, Calif.

Mr. Ertl is survived by his wife of 47 years; a son, Tibor Ertl of Spokane; three daughters, Maria “Milton” Blount of Spokane, Suzanna of Santa Rosa, Calif., Catherine Prows of Newman Lake; a brother, Miklos Ertll of Alhambra; a sister, Rozalia Ertll of Hungary; and two grandchildren.

Oliver Mills Sr. Spokane

Visitation for Oliver Preston Mills Sr. will be from 9 a.m to 9 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Service is planned for 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Mr. Mills, 82, died Monday. He was born in Texarkana, Ark.

He had lived in Spokane for 50 years and was a foundry worker.

Survivors include four sons, Oliver Mills Jr. of Bellevue, Wash., James Johnson of Compton, Calif., Robert Gix of Spokane, and Otis Mills of Pueblo, Colo.; three daughters, Irene Carr of Denver, Doretha Dowell of Nashville, Tenn., and Olivia Mills-Glasper of Seattle; a sister, Marjorie Robinson of Moses Lake; a brother, Roy Mills of Seattle; 18 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

John Ryan Liberty Lake

Memorial service for John R. Ryan, 66, will be at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Liberty Lake Community Church. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Ryan, who was born in Chehalis, Wash., died Tuesday.

He graduated from high school in Arlington, Wash., and later served in the Coast Guard from 1948 to 1951.

He worked for Boeing and as a sales representative for Olympic Stain Company.

He had lived in the Spokane area for 38 years and worked for Murphy-Favre and was later self-employed in the investment field.

He was a member of the El Katif Shrine, the El Katif Chanters and the Liberty Lake Community Church.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Alyce; two daughters, Kathleen Reese of Virginia Beach, Va., and Diane Ryan of Seattle; a son, Steven Ryan of Spokane; his mother, Hazel Ryan; two sisters, Patty Vance of Marysville, Wash., and Donna Huglen of Stanwood, Wash.; a brother, Mickey Ryan Jr. of Pasco; and two grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children..

Martin ‘Teddy’ Allen Spokane

Graveside inurnment for Martin “Teddy” Allen, 60, will be at 10 a.m. today at Fairmount Memorial Park. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Allen, who died Friday, was born in Havre, Mont.

He had worked for the Great Northern Railway and later worked as a machinist for Burlington Northern Railroad. He retired in the mid 1980s and was a 40-year Spokane resident.

Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Carol; two daughters; one son; two brothers; his mother, Edna Allen; and eight grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
