Surprising Brewers Shoulder Key Injuries

Associated Press

FROM REPLAY (Saturday, June 7, 1997): The Kansas City Royals did not select North Central’s Justin Willimas in major league baseball’s amateur draft. A story in Friday’s paper reported otherwise.

The Milwaukee Brewers, surprising contenders in the topsy-turvy A.L. Central, might be losing their only two sluggers for the rest of the season.

First baseman John Jaha and left fielder Marc Newfield are scheduled to get second opinions on shoulder injuries.

The club fears that the inflammation in Jaha’s left shoulder is the result of a rotator cuff tear. He is headed to Los Angeles on Monday to be examined by orthopedic specialist Frank Jobe.

Newfield, on the DL with an ailing right shoulder, will undergo an arthrogram to determine if there is any damage beyond inflammation.

Two local players drafted

Coeur d’Alene High’s Mark Scates was drafted Wednesday by the Colorado Rockies.

Scates, a right-handed pitcher and outfielder, was taken in the 34th round as an outfielder. He started on the Vikings’ State A-1 runner-up team this spring and was a four-year starter at CdA.

The Kansas City Royals continued to dip into the local talent pool, Wednesday selecting North Central’s Justin Williams in the 37th round of the draft.

Williams, an outfielder, led the Greater Spokane League with three triples. He hit .411 with 20 runs batted in and had 12 stolen bases.

Williams said he’ll likely sign if Kansas City pays for his first year of schooling at Columbia Basin Community College.

The Royals also drafted pitcher Jeremy Affeldt of Northwest Christian during Tuesday’s third round and Lakeside pitcher George Petticrew during the 31st round.

The draft ended Thursday.

A total of 1,607 players were taken in the 1997 major league baseball amateur draft.

Clearing the bases

The Anaheim Angels signed 14-year veteran Kevin Gross to bolster a pitching rotation that has been hurt by injuries to Mark Gubicza and Mark Langston. … Ryan McGuire was recalled from Triple-A Ottawa to replace David Segui in Montreal.
