Athens Mayor Sued Over Garbage Strike

Compiled From Wire Services

Health officials sprayed disinfectant over tons of uncollected trash in Athens on Friday and the city’s mayor was sued because garbage collectors refused to call off a strike.

Chief prosecutor Anastasios Kannelopoulos cited Mayor Dimitris Avramopoulos for failing to resolve a nearly weeklong work stoppage that has left more than 5,000 tons of garbage on city streets as Greece moves into its peak tourist season.

An assistant prosecutor will investigate whether Avramopoulos failed to carry out his duties as mayor.

Garbage collectors’ demands include pay increases and permanent work contracts for all part-time employees.
