Foyt Apologizes, Still Plans To Appeal

Compiled From Wire Services

Legendary racer A.J. Foyt telephoned driver Arie Luyendyk on Monday and apologized for hitting him in victory circle following Saturday’s Indy Racing League race at Texas Motor Speedway.

But Foyt has vowed to take his race protest of Luyendyk’s win, “as far as I have to take it, even to the courts if I have to. My driver knows he has a boss that will go down swinging.”

After admitting a malfunction in its scoring equipment, the race’s sanctioning body, U.S. Auto Club, changed the order in nine of the top-10 finishers in the True Value 500.

After awarding Foyt’s driver, Billy Boat, the trophy Saturday night, USAC announced Sunday that Luyendyk was really the winner, just as Luyendyk had maintained.
