Andy Potter Chosen Student Of The Month

Andy Potter, a senior at Lake City High School, has been chosen as the Student of the Month for May.

Potter, a 3.0 grade-point average student who was chosen as Mr. Lake City High School, is a member of Idaho Drug Free Youth and Youth Volunteers of America. He has been a three-year starter in varsity baseball and will play this summer for the Atlas Lumbermen.

Potter has been recruited to play baseball for the Washington State Cougars and will major in business.

Three local University of Idaho students will receive a $2,500 U of I and Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Competitive Edge Scholarships renewable for up to four years.

Students and their hometowns are listed:

Joshua Sementi, a mechanical engineering major from Coeur d’Alene and son of Gene and Shirene Sementi.

Howard Adams of Moscow, son of Douglas and Linda Adams; and Eric Chin, Moscow, an electrical engineering major and son of Donald and Deborah Chin; and Kimberly Childress, a zoology major from Wallace and daughter of Randall and Claudia Childress.

Travis Carrel, a Coeur d’Alene High School art student has been chosen as the winner of the 9-12 grade division of the American School Food Service Association’s 11th annual art contest.

He will receive his award at the Idaho State Conference later this month in Idaho Falls. This year’s theme is “Healthy Children - A New Beginning.”

Lori Churchill, a Coeur d’Alene School District 271 bus driver, has qualified to compete in the Idaho State Safety Competition later this month in Boise, after winning the district level bus safety competition and placing third at Region I competition held recently in Kellogg. The winner at state competition will advance to the national level in Portland later this year.

The following information ran incorrectly in a previous Achievements column:

Noppadol Paothong a staff member of The Sentinel, North Idaho College’s student newspaper, was selected as a veteran student of the year by his classmates. Paothong, from Thailand, will also serve as photo editor of the Sentinel for the fall semester.

Sue Jurgens, incoming Sentinel managing editor, received the rookie of the year award.
