New Christian Education Director Has A Familiar Face

Nina Culver Correspondent

Opportunity Christian Church has welcomed longtime member Leah Coleman as its new Christian education coordinator and youth director. Coleman assumed her new duties at the beginning of June.

In her work at Opportunity Christian, 708 N. Pines Road, Coleman will be responsible for coordinating events and religious education classes, recruiting and training youth group teachers and volunteers, and developing new adult education classes. A member of Opportunity Christian for 34 years, Coleman says she was excited to take on her new post.

Her advanced education helped prepare her for the job by broadening her view of the world, says Coleman.

“I’ve been able to use all those people skills I learned.”

Coleman went back to school in the late 1970s when she was 48, attending Spokane Community College and Gonzaga University, where she majored in psychology. She went on to receive a master’s degree in counseling from Eastern Washington University.

During the 10 years it took her to get her degrees, Coleman worked in the lunchroom of West Valley High School to pay for her tuition. “I really enjoyed being able to do that as a woman, particularly an older woman,” says Coleman.
