Playing Danno Made Him A Special Brand Of Haole

Compiled By Staff Writer Dan Web

James MacArthur is still getting mileage out of “Hawaii Five-O” reruns.

A co-star on the old police series, which ended its 12-year run in 1980, MacArthur played Det.

Dan Williams - who so often was the target of Jack Lord’s directive, “Book ‘em, Danno.”

And Hawaiian residents remember him.

As MacArthur explained to Biography magazine, “I was on the Big Island a few years ago, and I was speeding down a hill and a cop pulled me over. I gave him my license. He looked at it and looked at me and said, ‘Hey, slow down. And by the way, two miles down the road, we’ve got one more speed trap.”’

MacArthur, now 60, understands why.

“Twelve years on the force counts for something,” he said.

Loose talk

Bryant Gumbel on agreeing to host the Emmy awards show in September (as reported by the Associated Press): “Although I can’t sing and don’t dance, I welcome this challenge and look forward to an entertaining evening.”

That many candles would burn down Knots Landing

Joan Van Ark turns 54 today.

How did Ford maintain his figure? By dodging the draft

Harrison Ford, like many men of his generation, avoided military service by lying. Just out of college, the actor told Movieline magazine, he declared himself a conscientious objector. “My conscientious objection wasn’t based on a history of religious affiliation,” he said. Still, he added, “I confused (the draft board) so badly that they never took action on my petition.”

It’s nothing that a $100 million hit won’t cure

The love match between glam couple Geena Davis and director Renny Harlin is over. It’s probably just a coincidence that he directed her in the box-office flops “Cutthroat Island” and “The Long Kiss Goodnight.”

It’s a job that seldom gets the credit it deserves

As for the controversy surrounding her song “Bitch,” singer Meredith Brooks says, “Men completely get it and are so relieved that somebody’s saying it; all they want us to do is admit that we can be irrational and illogical sometimes, and then it’s their job to put up with it.”

That’s the O.J. case: Only the bare facts will do

You already know that Kato Kaelin is shopping a book proposal. But did you know that another O.J. Simpson trial figure, Faye Resnick, is again posing nude for Playboy. She’ll receive a reported $300,00 for appearing on video, compared to the magazine spread that earned her $400,000.

No, because that would be disgusting, you know

The most interesting aspect to Penthouse publisher Bob Guccione’s decision to run photographs of a couple having sex is the reaction of Penthouse’s main competitor, Playboy. Explicit sex, said Playboy spokeswoman Cindy Rakowitz, “is something Playboy does not do and will not do in your lifetime.”
