Spokane Boxers Advance

Three Spokane boxers have reached the semifinals of the National Junior Olympic Boxing Championships in Marquette, Mich., which matches up the nation’s best 15- and 16-year-old boxers.

Joe Roberts of the Lilac City Boxing Club won at 119 pounds with a 3-2 victory over Heriberto Acevedo of Philadelphia.

At 125, Mahlon Kerwick, also from the Lilac City club, took a 5-0 decision over Ben Sukup of North Fork, Neb.

At 132, Spokane Eagles boxer Dewey Welliver won on an disqualification in the third round of his fight with Tyrese Henricks of Gainesville, Ga.

Stars exhibitions

Three national tournament-bound Spokane Stars AAU girls basketball teams will play in a doubleheader tonight at North Idaho College.

The U-17 and U-16 teams face off at 6, followed at 8 by the U-18 team taking on the North Idaho All-Stars, a combination of college and former high school players. Cost is $3, $2 for children and senior citizens.

Legion baseball

Sean Ruscio threw a four-hit complete game and Joe Moll’s three-run double highlighted a seven-run third inning Wednesday night as the Bandits defeated the North Stars 12-3 in five innings at Shadle Park’s Jackson Field.

Abe Nisbet was 3 for 5 with a homer and four RBIs to lead the Blue Devils to a 14-5 win over the North Stars at Shadle Park.

Streeter joins NIC

Former Wallace track standout Dana Streeter, a hurdler and long jumper, is transferring from Nevada to North Idaho College.
