Agassi To Miss Wimbledon
Former Wimbledon champion Andre Agassi withdrew from this year’s tournament, citing a wrist injury.
Agassi suffered a recurring wrist problem in the AT&T Challenge in Atlanta in April. The 1992 champion and former world No. 1 also missed the French Open with the same injury, and has slumped to 29th in the ATP world rankings, winning just six of his 12 matches in 1997.
American Michael Chang and Dutchman Richard Krajicek pulled through tough quarterfinals in the Heineken Trophy tennis tournament, a Wimbledon tuneup in Rosmalen, Netherlands.
The WTA women’s tourney at Rosmalen was hit by an evening downpour, which cut short top-seeded German Anke Huber’s semifinal with Dutchwoman Miriam Oremans with the match at 6-4, 4-6. Third-seeded Ruxandra Dragomir beat No. 8 Asa Carlsson of Sweden.
Jana Novotna was three points from the semifinals when rain washed out play at the Eastbourne, England, women’s grass-court tournament. Officials said they would try to complete the tournament today.
