Holmgren and Lombardi to cross paths
A street that intersects Lombardi Avenue in Ashwaubenon, Wis., will be renamed Holmgren Way in honor of the Green Bay Packers’ current coach.
The vote was unanimous to change the name of Gross Street to honor Mike Holmgren, effective July 4.
Holmgren is the first Green Bay coach to win the NFL championship since Vince Lombardi captured the first two Super Bowls in 1967 and 1968.
Gross Street is about two blocks from Lambeau Field, where the Packers play.
Any street name that summed up the Packer teams of the ‘70s, ‘80s and early ‘90s should be renamed.
Andrew Dice Clay must have been busy
Iowa sports officials say they wish they hadn’t invited comedian Norm MacDonald and they don’t plan to do it again.
MacDonald, who is the anchor on the “Weekend Update” segment on “Saturday Night Live,” was among the entertainers at a golf event that raises money for the athletic department.
His 50-minute routine was laced with profanity and sexual references.
“Norm MacDonald’s performance was anything but comedy,” athletic director Bob Bowlsby said. “It was profane, vulgar and off-color. The last thing I want to do is suppress anybody’s First Amendment rights, but I feel his material is inappropriate in the majority of venues in America.”
Bowlsby, who issued the apology on behalf of the department, said about 80 percent of the people in the audience of 1,300 walked out during MacDonald’s performance.
As they streamed to the exits, MacDonald asked, “What do you want me to talk about - losing my luggage at the airport? What do they expect - for me to hold up a picture of Yasser Arafat and make a joke?”
Bowlsby, himself a walkout, added that the comedian’s invitation to play in the benefit golf event was withdrawn.
Did he spot John Starks in the crowd?
New York Mets closer John Franco felt right at home.
Reflecting on the team’s motorcade to Yankee Stadium for an interleague game, Franco said:
“Once we got into the Bronx, people started to figure out who we were behind those tinted windows. They flashed the finger and cursed us out a bit. It made me feel right at home.”

We certainly can understand Sandy Koufax voted in at No. 1. But when people were asked to cast votes on a Web site regarding the greatest Jewish sports figures, Christians Bill Parcels and Ryne Sandberg came in sixth and ninth, respectively.
In that case, where were Freddie Solomon and Haven Moses?

The Meadowdale (Ohio) High School girls 4x400-meter relay team was disqualified in the semifinals of the state track and field championships because the colors of the runners’ sports bras didn’t match.
