Wanted: Heroes And Helpful Kids
A hero is measured by substance, not celebrity.
While the famous or notorious are often those who receive fanfare, there are unsung heroes among us who deserve recognition. These inconspicuous champions are quietly working to better their communities, demonstrating on a daily basis the qualities of a hero: distinguished ability, noble character, relentless courage.
Who are your heroes? Washington Citizen magazine wishes to honor them. The monthly publication of the Washington Family Council is seeking nominations for the Most Wanted Heroes Award.
“Those of us who have lived in this Evergreen state … know that Washington is full of heroes,” writes Citizen magazine. “Through heroes we are inspired to dream … motivated to work hard … and encouraged to never give up.”
These heroes may be mothers improving their neighborhoods; teens standing against peer pressure; or men and women feeding the homeless or teaching children to read.
Washington Citizen invites you to write about a person who is making a difference in your community. Send a one-page description of your candidate’s heroism. The magazine will highlight several heroes over the coming months, either by publishing their stories, sending them recognition letters or presenting them with honorary awards. There is no deadline for this ongoing contest and no age requirement.
Send your “Heroes Wanted” essay to: WFC/Citizen Editor, P.O. Box 40584, Bellevue, WA 98015.
Perhaps your picture is worth more than a thousand words. Enter it in a national photo contest and it could win a grand prize worth $20,000.
The Bayer Corporation, makers of Flintstones vitamins, is sponsoring a contest called “Flintstones Kids: A Picture of Health.”
The competition will reward photos which best show kids being cheerful, helpful and resourceful, qualities which contribute to a child’s health and well-being.
In addition to the grand prize (a $20,000 savings bond for college), 10 first-place winners will receive a Flintstones Kids birthday party for 30, including party invitations, paper goods and disposable cameras. These winners will also receive $1,000 in cash to help make the party memorable. Two hundred second-place winners will be awarded a three-pack of 24-exposure disposable cameras.
To enter the contest, parents take a photo showing their child representing the themes of cheerfulness, helpfulness and resourcefulness. (The photo can portray one or more of these qualities).
Each entry must contain only one photo, with one child in that photo being the contestant. The child’s age must be 12 or under.
Photos can be in color or black and white, ranging in size from 3 by 5 inches to 8 by 10 inches. Photos will be judged on the qualities represented in the contestant as well as originality and photo composition. All photos are nonreturnable.
Include your name and address on the contest entry form, along with the child’s name and age in the photo. On a separate 3-by 5s- inch card, print the words “Flintstones Kids.”
Mail the entry to: Flintstones Vitamins Photo Contest, P.O. Box 8070, Grand Rapids, MN 55745-8070. The contest deadline is Aug. 30, 1997. Winners will be notified by mail before Oct. 15.
