Teen Is Mother Of Baby She Said Found On Porch
Police do not understand how an adult living with a teenage girl could not notice that she was pregnant and gave birth on Thursday.
The 17-year-old who said she found a red-haired infant boy on her porch early Thursday later admitted she was the baby’s mother.
“I was scared and did not know what to do,” the mother said in a written statement Friday. “I also thought that by claiming I found the baby, a suitable family would adopt him.”
Authorities only know that the baby, who is healthy and resting at Columbia West Valley Medical Center, was born in the girl’s home. The teen told police she did not know she was pregnant until about a month ago.
She said she was able to conceal her pregnancy from her family because her mother works nights. But police on Friday questioned 49-year-old David Summers, who lives with the teen and her mother.
Authorities asked Summers how he could be unaware that a baby was born upstairs while he slept on a sofa downstairs.
“I told them I didn’t know,” Summers said. “Had I known, I’d have had her at the hospital.”
