Ucla Captures Ncaa Berth Bruins Edge Ducks In Home Finale To Win Third Consecutive Pac-10 Championship

Associated Press

Tears flowed as UCLA seniors Charles O’Bannon, Cameron Dollar and Bob Myers were introduced at Pauley Pavilion for the final time in their careers.

Oregon nearly caused more tears before the 10th-ranked Bruins rallied from a 16-point deficit to beat the Ducks 74-67 in Los Angeles on Saturday and win their seventh straight game.

“I tried to play it down and tell the team it’s a regular game,” said O’Bannon, who had 23 points and nine rebounds. “No tears, but my mom shed enough for all of us.”

Sadness turned to cheers when the Bruins (19-7, 13-3 Pac-10) clinched the conference’s automatic NCAA berth.

They ensured at least a tie for their third consecutive Pac-10 title.

“We have plenty of things to work on,” said UCLA coach Steve Lavin, whose team blew a 17-point lead against Oregon State Thursday before pulling out a win. “We have two games on the road, but in the last two (home) games, we have learned that we cannot be complacent. We’re not a good enough team to go half-speed and get Ws.”

The Ducks (16-10, 7-10), who beat UCLA 87-85 in overtime a month ago, threatened for much of the game to complete a season sweep.

They led by 16 points twice in the first half, and were still on top 64-63 on two free throws by Jamal Lawrence with 4:14 remaining.

“They came out with a lot of emotion, but we kept our poise and were able to chip down the lead,” O’Bannon said. The Bruins, started by O’Bannon’s putback, rallied with a game-closing 11-3 run. Toby Bailey had five points in the spurt, including a game-ending reverse slam dunk.
