Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin made a late lobbying pitch for Russia’s Olympic bid, telling International Olympic Committee chief Juan Antonio Samaranch that St. Petersburg “can and should” host the 2004 Games.

His telephone call to Samaranch was the latest evidence the government is pushing hard in favor of Russia’s second city - seemingly a long shot due to continuing economic and social problems.
