Lakeside To Play For Idaho A-4 Championship Twiss Leads Top-Rated Knights; Drager’s Career Ends At Mullan

Andrew Twiss scored 13 points and picked off 11 rebounds Friday as Lakeside advanced to the championship game of the boys A-4 State basketball tournament by defeating Dietrich 60-53 at Borah High School.

Today, the top-ranked Knights, who improved their record to 22-1, will meet second-ranked Troy (23-3) at 2:40 PST at Nampa for the title. Troy edged Shoshone (19-8) 50-45 in the other semifinal. Dietrich, third-ranked, will play the Troy-Shoshone loser for third place.

Lakeside used a fast start to take command of its game with Dietrich (22-5). The Hawks led the Blue Devils 18-9 after one quarter and shook off Dietrich’s most serious challenge by outscoring them 18-15 in the fourth period.

Brendon Nelson, who made all five of his field-goal attempts for Lakeside, matched Twiss with 13 points.

Dietrich was devastated by terrible free-throw shooting. The Blue Devils sank 4 of 20 attempts from the foul line. Top scorer Bryce McCowen, who finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds, made 2 of 6.

The fifth-ranked Trojans brought the long career of Mullan coach John Drager to an end by eliminating the Tigers in a loser-out game.

Garrett Jones, accounting for 22 of his team’s 42 field-goal attempts, scored 30 points as Nampa Christian advanced to today’s fifth-place game against Cascade.

Chris Angle led the way for Mullan with 25 points. Teammate Al Sisk, who had 24 points in Thursday’s loss to Troy, scored 15 to go with 11 rebounds.

Four players accounted for all of Mullan’s points. Dan Fritz and Steve Greenfield scored 10 apiece. However, Sisk and Angle fouled out, leading to 27 free throws for Nampa Christian. The Trojans made 13 of them. Mullan had 14 attempts and made seven.

Drager has announced his retirement from coaching after a colorful career that has included 32 seasons as football coach and 28 as boys basketball coach. His football teams won 14 North Star League championships and his basketball teams won or tied for 14 titles.

His final basketball team, which has been promised a spring vacation trip to Las Vegas, won 18 games and lost eight.
