New Ace Of Speeds

Compiled From Wire Services

Australia’s Mark Philippoussis slammed a 142-mph serve past Zimbabwe’s Bryon Black en route to a quarterfinal victory in the Franklin Templeton Classic in Scottsdale, Ariz.

“I didn’t see too much of it,” Black said.

The serve resulted in an ace and set an ATP Tour speed record as Philippoussis won 7-5, 6-3. The old mark of 139.8 mph was set by Britain’s Greg Rusedski last year in Beijing, China.

“It felt very smooth and it was effortless,” the 20-year-old Philippoussis said. “I just threw it up. I didn’t try to hit it hard, but my rhythm was so smooth I didn’t even feel like I hit the ball in.”

Former tennis star Roscoe Tanner was released on $5,000 bond after spending the night in a Naples, Fla., jail for nonpayment of child support.

Tanner, 45, was released with the stipulation that he appear in a New Jersey court Monday. New Jersey officials agreed to the release after Tanner paid $40,000 worth of overdue child support payments, prosecutors said.

“I’m going to New Jersey on Monday to answer questions and to begin presenting my side of the story to unravel the situation. The authorities in Naples treated me very well,” Tanner said.
