Tanner Surrenders

Compiled From Wire Services

Tennis player Roscoe Tanner surrendered to authorities in Somerville, N.J., to face prosecution for failing to pay child support.

Tanner, 45, was photographed, fingerprinted and released after posting $10,000 bail for willful non-support of a child he fathered with Connie Romano.

Tanner, a married father of four, met Romano in May 1993 and had a brief affair with her that produced a daughter, Omega Anne Romano, officials said.

Tanner won the Australian Open in 1977, was a finalist at Wimbledon in 1979 and reached the U.S. Open semifinals twice. At Indian Wells, Calif., two-time Newsweek Cup champion Jim Courier was upset in a first-round match by unseeded Francisco Clavet of Spain 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

Top seed Arantxa Sanchez Vicario breezed into the quarterfinals of the $1.25 million Evert Cup in Indian Wells, Calif., by beating Asa Carlsson of Sweden, 6-1, 6-3, in the third round.
