Law Signed Setting Up Fund For Water Systems
Gov. Phil Batt signed into law Tuesday a measure to set up a revolving loan fund to help small communities upgrade their drinking water systems.
The bill, SB1036, commits Idaho to putting up matching funds that eventually will bring the state $100 million in federal funds for the revolving loan program.
The federal money is available through U.S. Sen. Dirk Kempthorne’s amendments to the Safe Drinking Water Act.
“This guarantees Idaho will have a safe, usable supply of drinking water,” Batt said as he signed the bill.
North Idaho particularly needs the money. More than half of the state’s systems that use surface water - which requires expensive treatment - are located in the five northern counties.
