Lottery Winnings Tax Headed For Final Vote
Winners of major lottery prizes after this year are just a vote away from having to pay state income tax on their windfall.
The Senate Local Government and Taxation Committee sent a House-passed bill to the full Senate on Friday for final legislative action.
The legislation is aimed at generating about $1 million a year to augment cash now being spent on anti-drug programs for teenagers.
The bill’s prospects with Gov. Phil Batt were uncertain even though he was opposed to the Lottery when it was initiated in 1988 and 1989.
