John Fahey Recipient Of Robert Gray Award
John R. Fahey, retired professor emeritus of Eastern Washington University and an area historian, has been presented the Robert Gray Award by the Washington State Historical Society.
Fahey was recognized for distinguished achievement in Pacific Northwest History.
He has written nine books covering Northwest mining, railroads, Indians and Spokane’s history. His latest book is “Shaping Spokane: Jay P. Graves and His Times.”
Cauligi “Raghu” Raghavendra, a Washington State University computer science professor, has been elected a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
He was honored for his research on high-speed networking, parallel processing and mobile computing issues. He has been WSU’s Boeing chairman in computer engineering the past four years.
Lt. Col. Gary Whitworth has received the Air Force Commendation Medal for demonstrating outstanding achievement or meritorious service on behalf of the Air Force.
Although wounded himself, Whitworth helped other seriously wounded airmen immediately after the 1996 bombing of the Khobar Towers in Saudi Arabia. He was awarded a Purple Heart.
He is the son of Lorraine VerStoppen, Spokane.
Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Justin Umpenhour was promoted to his current rank while serving aboard the dock-landing ship, USS Harpers Ferry, in San Diego. He is the son of Jacki Maddox, Spokane.
Sherry Hietala, a University of Washington student majoring in physics and mathematics, has been named to the Dean’s List. She is the daughter of Eric Hietala, Spokane.
Clara Demmer has been elected into the International Poetry Hall of Fame by the directors and advisory committee of the National Library of Poetry.
Liane Praza, a Spokane student attending Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., earned academic honors by maintaining at least a 3.5 grade-point average for the fall semester. Praza is majoring in science.
Jennifer Hebb, a 1993 graduate of Mead High School, was named to the Dean’s List for the fall semester at the University of Puget Sound, where she is majoring in chemistry. To qualify, students must maintain at least a 3.75 grade-point average.
Hebb is the daughter of David and Barbara Hebb, Spokane.
Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Daniel Domrese, a 1994 graduate of Gonzaga Prep, has graduated from the aerospace propulsion apprentice course at Sheppard Air Force Base, Wichita Falls, Texas.
He is the son of Nancy and Larry Domrese, Spokane.
Army Cpl. Clifford Beattie, a 1992 graduate of Medical Lake High School, has graduated from the Army’s primary leadership development course at Fort Drum, Watertown, N.Y. He is the son of Senior Master Sgt. Victor and Rhonda Beattie, Medical Lake.
