Late ‘Lanche Rally Ends Ducks’ Streak

From Wire Reports

Peter Forsberg scored just 66 seconds after setting up Valeri Kamensky’s tying goal with 2:30 left as the Colorado Avalanche rallied for a 4-3 win over the Anaheim Mighty Ducks.

The loss snapped the Ducks’ club-record unbeaten streak at 12 games.

Jason Dawe scored twice and Michael Peca had a goal and two assists as the Buffalo Sabres beat Washington 4-1, clinching a playoff spot despite tying a franchise low with 12 shots.

The Sabres won for the fourth time in five games and snapped the Capitals’ 4-0-1 home unbeaten streak. The Sabres’ 12 shots were the fewest since they had a dozen in a 3-2 victory over Calgary on Nov. 11, 1988.

Arturs Irbe recorded his third shutout of the season and assisted on Sergei Zubov’s insurance goal in the third period as the Dallas Stars blanked the Hartford Whalers 2-0, extending their unbeaten streak to seven games and setting a franchise record with their 43rd win of the season.

In the New York Rangers’ 3-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings, Mark Messier scored his 35th goal of the season and 574th of his career, moving him one ahead of former New York Islanders star Mike Bossy for 10th place on the NHL’s all-time list.

Hatcher undergoes knee surgery

All-Star defenseman Derian Hatcher will be out of the Dallas Stars’ lineup for 7-10 days after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery Friday morning.

The Montreal Canadiens won’t say if injured center Saku Koivu will be able to play today against the Washington Capitals until game time, a team spokeswoman said. Koivu, 22, has missed the past three games with a sprained left shoulder.

Blackhawks sign Nabokov

The Chicago Blackhawks signed center Dmitri Nabokov to a multiyear contract, three months before the 1995 first-round pick would have been eligible to re-enter the National Hockey League draft.

Nabokov, 20, has spent this season playing for the Western Hockey League’s Regina Pats, where he has collected 39 goals and 56 assists in 50 games.
