Familiar Names Top Cda Coaching List

Eight candidates will be interviewed the next two weeks for the head football coaching job at Coeur d’Alene High School, a school official said Friday.

Among the finalists are a pair of Coeur d’Alene graduates and successful coaches in the area.

CdA athletic director Larry Schwenke, a former head football coach at the school, released the names of the finalists selected from a pool of 20 applicants.

Most recognizable names belong to Bill Barlow, former two-time Sandpoint head coach and current Bulldogs assistant, who is a CdA grad and Lake City resident; Sean Dorris, a CdA and University of Montana grad; and Shawn Amos, Kellogg head coach and a CdA resident.

Former Kellogg coach Randy Gleave, now at Hillcrest in Idaho Falls, is also a finalist. The others are Bill Hicks, head coach at Burley near Twin Falls; Lindsay Hughes of Ames, Iowa, a former Washington State and Iowa State assistant; Lawrence Thomas, head coach at Green Valley in Henderson, Nev.; and Greg Trenary, former head coach at Jerome, Idaho, and Helena High and current assistant at Helena-Capital.

None of the finalists were interviewed when the job was open two years ago.

Schwenke said the selection committee hopes to finish interviews by April 11, with a recommendation to the school board by April 14.

The position opened in February when Bill Anderson, 51, resigned because of health reasons.

Anderson had what was determined to be a mild heart attack the night before CdA’s final regular-season game. He left the hospital to coach the game, a 24-14 win over crosstown rival Lake City.

His two teams had a 6-12 record.

Baseball

Ryan Heitmann (2-0) pitched a four-hitter in the opener as Lewiston swept visiting Coeur d’Alene 5-1, 3-1 in an Inland Empire League double-header.

The Vikings dinged Heitmann in the first inning, when Andy Gore’s single scored Nick Rook. Heitmann settled down to strike out eight.

CdA’s Casey Hoorelbeke (1-1) pitched a two-hitter in the second game, but the Bengals scored twice in the fifth on an error.

Bryan Schutz had three hits to help Mead to a 12-6 non-league win over visiting Lake City.

Andy Hayes had three of the Timberwolves’ eight hits.

Softball

Freshman Blake Hoorelbeke (3-2) picked up a pair of wins as visiting Coeur d’Alene (5-3, 2-0) swept Lewiston 9-8, 14-0 in an IEL doubleheader.

Jessica Moore’s RBI grounder in the eighth put the Vikings ahead in the opener. Stacy Mitchell and Gilliam Dodds had three hits apiece for CdA.

Hoorelbeke walked two and struck out nine, including the last six in the second game. CdA’s Amber Orr had two hits, giving her four for the day.

Horse racing

A second public hearing on a bill the Spokane horse racing community says needs to be amended will be held Monday before the House Trade and Economic Development Committee in Olympia.

The bill, SB 5762, would allow the state’s tracks to simulcast races to other tracks across the country and also permit betting on racing cards from out of state.

But it would not allow simulcasting in-state to off-track betting sites within 60 miles of any track conducting a live meet, a restriction tough for Playfair representatives to handle.

In 1995, 89 percent of Playfair’s off-track betting came from within 60 miles of Emerald Downs. Playfair would lose that access under the bill.
