Lake City, Cda Earn Berths To State Tourney
It was a day of upsets in state-qualifying softball tournaments Saturday.
But the top seeds that were upset fought back to qualify for state.
In the A-1 Region I Tournament at Post Falls, third-seeded Lake City not only knocked off top-seeded Coeur d’Alene, the Timberwolves stopped the game in five innings.
Lake City handled Coeur d’Alene 14-4 in a run-rule shortened title game.
After Lewiston eliminated Sandpoint 7-2, Coeur d’Alene bounced back to make sure there wasn’t another heartbreaker as the Vikings earned the second berth to state with a hard-fought 3-1 win over the Bengals.
In the A-2 District I-II Tournament at Rathdrum, No. 1-seeded Lakeland watched a three-run lead fizzle as second-seeded Moscow rallied for a 9-8 win in the championship game.
After St. Maries ended Priest River’s season, Lakeland did likewise to St. Maries in an 11-3 decision.
At Post Falls, Lake City (11-10) fell behind 4-0.
But the Timberwolves’ bats, inconsistent and rather quiet most of the season, warmed up in more ways than one Saturday.
LC jumped on freshman pitching sensation Blake Hoorelbeke, who threw back-to-back no-hitters going into the final day of the tournament.
The T-Wolves chased Hoorelbeke with eight runs in the fourth inning. LC freshman Megan Carpenter knocked in the game-ending run in the fifth.
All LC players had at least one hit and one RBI. Sophomore Shelby McIntosh led with three hits and three RBI.
“We’ve been struggling (offensively) all year,” said LC coach Dwight Wilson, whose club has finished runner-up at state the past two years. “The kids just put it together themselves today.”
No details of Coeur d’Alene’s (19-5) state-qualifying win over Lewiston were reported.
The state tournament will be held Thursday through Saturday at Coeur d’Alene.

At Rathdrum, the Hawks (15-5) watched the district title slip away in the sixth inning against Moscow (17-4).
The Bears used two singles and a walk to load the bases. That set the stage for Emy Makus, who slapped a three-run triple to the fence.
St. Maries opened a 2-0 lead through three innings of the final game, but it wasn’t long before Lakeland’s bats came around.
The defending state champ Hawks struck for three runs in the fourth and put it away with four runs each in the fifth and sixth innings.
Annie Carhart had a two-run single for Lakeland and Monica Hall had a two-run homer.
The state tournament will be held Thursday through Saturday at Coeur d’Alene.
