Mary Pierce overcame her own early inconsistency and battled past Barbara Paulus 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 to reach the final of the Italian Open tennis event at Rome.

She will face four-time defending champion Conchita Martinez in today’s championship match. Martinez rolled past Swiss teenager Patty Schnyder 6-2, 6-2.

At Hamburg, Germany, Andrei Medvedev routed Yevgeny Kafelnikov and Felix Mantilla outlasted Tommy Haas to reach the final of the $2.3 million German Open.

Medvedev moved within one step of his third German Open title with a 6-3, 6-1 victory and Mantilla, the 10th-seeded Spaniard, rallied for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory.
