Sister Sarah Crowley Spokane

Vigil service for Sister Sarah (Mary Nina) Crowley, will be at 7 p.m. today at the Convent of the Holy Names Chapel. Funeral Mass will be at 4 p.m. Thursday. Private burial will be Friday at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Sister Sarah, who was born in Fairfield, died Tuesday. She was 95.

She attended St. Joseph’s Elementary School in Tekoa, Wash., and Cheney Normal School.

Sister Sarah was a teacher for 37 years in Washington and Oregon and in 1967 began library work and parish ministry in Edmonds, Wash.

In 1984 she moved to Spokane, where she joined the community service and prayer apostolate at Marian Hall and the Convent of the Holy Names.

Survivors include a sister-in-law, Marjorie of Sacramento, Calif.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of the Holy Names Retirement Fund.

Calvin Sasse Spokane

Visitation for Calvin John Sasse, 72, is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North. Service will be held at a later date at Wolfe Funeral Home in Villisca, Iowa.

Mr. Sasse, who was born in Omak, Wash., died Monday from Lou Gehrig’s disease.

He served in the Navy in the South Pacific during World War II.

He moved to Spokane from Chehalis, Wash., in 1961 and worked as a salesman for Pacific Fruit Produce for 34 years. He retired in 1986.

Mr. Sasse was a member of Eagles Lodge No. 2 and the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Mary Sasse; a son, Lary Sasse of Vancouver, Wash.; a daughter, Susan Gulbranson of Fort Scott, Kan.; a sister, Dorothy Coady of Reedsport, Ore.; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Marie (Stucky) Jantz Ritzville, Wash.

Visitation for Marie (Stucky) Jantz, 90, is scheduled from 2 to 7 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. to noon on Thursday at the Danekas Funeral Home in Ritzville. Service is planned for 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Menno Mennonite Church west of Ritzville. Vault interment will be at the Menno Cemetery west of Ritzville.

Mrs. Jantz, who was born in Moundridge, Kan., died Sunday.

She was a 25-year Ritzville resident and had attended Central College in McPherson, Kan., and Bethel College in North Newton, Kan.

She was a member of the Soroptimist Club, the Business and Professional Women’s Club, the Menno Mennonite Church of Ritzville and the Priest Lake Community Church.

Survivors include her husband of 25 years, Joe; and a brother, Edward Stucky of Snohomish, Wash.

John ‘J.J.’ ‘Spike’ Arlt Ellensburg

Service for John Julius “J.J.,” “Spike,” Arlt will be at 1 p.m. today at Danekas Funeral Home in Ritzville, Wash. Burial will be at the Ritzville Memorial Cemetery.

Mr. Arlt, who was born on the family homestead near Ritzville, died Saturday. He was 96.

He was a farmer in the Marcellus area north of Ritzville for most of his life.

Mr. Arlt moved to Ellensburg eight years ago.

His wife of 56 years, Wilma (Franson) Arlt, died in 1985.

Survivors include two sons, Gene Arlt of Ritzville and Walter Arlt of Ellensburg; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Amy Pearson Spokane

Memorial service for Amy Helen Pearson, 97, will be at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Salem Lutheran Church. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Pearson, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Saturday.

She was a photographer.

Her husband of 64 years, Ivan Pearson, died in 1983.

Mrs. Pearson is survived by a son, Leonard Pearson; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mary Schulz Spokane

Visitation for Mary M. Schulz is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at the Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North. Service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mrs. Schulz, who was born in Fruitland, Wash., died Monday. She was 69.

She was a 50-year Spokane resident and attended school in Loon Lake, Wash.

In 1946 she married Meryl Schultz in Deer Park, and they moved to Spokane, where she was a homemaker.

Mrs. Schulz was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1474 Auxiliary and the Loon Lake Assembly of God.

She is survived by her husband; a son, Frank Schulz of Spokane; four sisters, Rose Martin of Everett, Emily Frazer of Lewiston, Nellie Young of Canyon City, Ore., and Alice Abbott of Deer Park; a brother, Cecil Harris of Ford, Wash.; and seven grandchildren.

John Shaw Spokane

Memorial service for John Edward Shaw, 74, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Shaw, who was born in Terry, Mont., died Friday.

He served in the Army during World War II.

In 1975 he moved from Clarkston, Wash., to Spokane.

He had worked as a salesman for Modern Machinery and retired in 1982.

His wife of 32 years, Mable Johnson, died in 1987.

Mr. Shaw is survived by two sisters, Kathleen Lang and Elizabeth Eaton, both of Portland.

Richard Christianson Spokane

Memorial service for Richard K. Christianson, 59, is scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday at Spokane Valley Church of the Nazarene. Hennessey-Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Christianson, who was born in Fairview, Mont., died Thursday.

He had worked as a brakeman for Burlington Northern Railroad and was a 31-year Spokane resident.

He was a member of the United Transportation Union.

Survivors include his wife of 11 years, Mariann; a son, Kenneth Christianson of Reno, Nev.; three daughters, Sandra Christianson of Puyallup, Wash., Julie Bliesner of Spokane and Michelle Christianson of Seattle; a sister, Alyce Bailey of Spokane; and seven grandchildren.

Donna Rice Spokane

Memorial service for Donna (Bahr) Rice, 49, was Tuesday at Otis Orchards Community Church.

Mrs. Rice, who was born in Warm Springs, Mont., died Saturday.

In 1962 she and her family moved to the Spokane Valley from Pampa, Texas. She attended Central Valley High School.

She later began a career in data entry and accounting and worked for Kiemle and Hagood.

Mrs. Rice is survived by two daughters, Debra Barnes and Doreen Chamberlin of Newman Lake; four sisters, Nelda Anderson, Clara Sims, Linda Hubble and Pamela Richards; and four grandchildren.

John Spell Airway Heights

Memorial service for John Cahill Spell, 65, is planned for 10 a.m. today at the Fairchild Air Force Base Chapel. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Spell, who was was born in Nampa, Idaho, died Thursday.

He served in the Air Force during Korean and Vietnam wars.

After his retirement from the military he worked for Flightcraft for 13 year. He had lived in Airway Heights for 22 years.

He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2218 and the American Legion in Cheney.

Mr. Spell is survived by his wife of 40 years, Beverly; two daughters, Jackie Spell of San Pablo, Calif., and Susan Knepp of Severn, Md.; two sons, Thomas Spell of Airway Heights and Marshall Spell of Fort Hood, Texas; and seven grandchildren.

Mabel Hanson Hayden Lake, Idaho

Visitation for Mabel Judith Hanson, 61, was Tuesday at Yates Funeral Home. Graveside service will be today at 11 a.m. at Forest Cemetery in Coeur d’Alene. Mrs. Hanson, who was born in Troy, Mont., died Friday.

She grew up in Spirit Lake and had lived in Cataldo and Bonners Ferry before moving to Hayden Lake in 1977.

Survivors include her husband of 46 years, Marvin; a son, Marvin Hanson of Hayden; three daughters, Judith Lofthus of Hayden, Deborah Wegner of Athol and Margy Hattenburg of Hayden Lake; a sister, Barbara Kruse of Rathdrum; three stepbrothers, Pat Mott of Twin Lakes, Idaho, Duffy White of Rathdrum and John Mott of Athol; two stepsisters, Frances Meduna of Spokane and Eunis White of St. Maries; 16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Ralph Meadows Spokane

Service for Ralph Eugene Meadows, 79, will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Burial will follow at the Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mr. Meadows, who was born in Benton, Ill., was a 44-year Spokane resident. He died Saturday.

He worked at Kaiser Aluminum and was a member of the United Steelworkers Union.

In 1941 he married Opel Balentine in West Helena, Ark. She died in 1977.

Mr. Meadows served in the Navy Seabees from 1942 to 1945.

Survivors include a son, William Meadows of Thurston, Ore.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Cathleen ‘Peeps’ Lewis Spokane

Service for Cathleen C. “Peeps” Lewis, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Riplinger Funeral Home. Burial will be at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mrs. Lewis, 65, died Sunday. She was born in Cut Bank, Mont.

In 1971 she moved to Spokane and worked as a receptionist and bookkeeper for Dr. L. Wiwatowski for 20 years.

She was a member of the Cut Bank Eagles Lodge.

Her husband, John Lewis, died in 1985.

She is survived by her companion, Jerry McElroy of Spokane; two daughters Tracy Goldrick and Lynn Comer, both of Spokane; a son, Dan Goldrick of Billings, Mont.; a sister, Elinor Shannon of Spokane; and two granddaughters.

Margaret Wands Spokane

Funeral Mass for Margaret Joell Wands, 63, will be at 4 p.m. today at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. There will be private burial. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Wands, who was born Greenwich, N.Y., died Sunday.

She was a 27-year Spokane resident and had worked as an accountant for 22 years for Spokane County.

Mrs. Wands was a member of the American Business Women’s Association and St. Francis of Assisi Parish, where she was in the church choir and served as director of the children’s choir.

She is survived by a son, Curtis Wands of Chicago; and four daughters, Kathleen Meredith of Nine Mile Falls, Barbara Pierce of Benton City, Wash., Cynthia Wands of Los Angeles and Susan Wands of New York City.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church or the Poor Clare Nuns.

Helen McKenzie Spokane

Memorial service for Helen G. McKenzie, 91, is planned for 2 p.m. today at the Unity Church of Truth. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. McKenzie, who was born in Harrison, Idaho, died Sunday.

She graduated from the University of Idaho with a bachelor of arts degree in music.

She moved to Spokane 75 years ago and was a teacher and a librarian for Pratt School.

Mrs. McKenzie was a member of the Delta Gamma Sorority and was a founder of both the Lilac Blind Foundation and the Friday Musical Club.

She was preceded in death by two husbands, Harold McKenzie and Lester Livengood.

Survivors include a son, Mark Livengood of Tacoma; a daughter, Margaret Livengood Alton of Phoenix and four grandchildren.

Matilda ‘Tillie’ Lobe Odessa, Wash.

Service for Matilda “Tillie” Lobe, 97, will be at 10 a.m. today at the Heritage United Congregational Church in Odessa. Burial will be at Odessa Cemetery. Strate Funeral Home in Odessa is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Lobe, who was born Bessarabia, Russia, died Saturday.

She moved to Odessa in 1948 and was a homemaker.

Mrs. Lobee was a member of the Heritage United Congregational Church.

She is survived by a son, Leonard Lobe of Odessa; a daughter, Bernice Melcher of Odessa; eight grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Richard Murbach Davenport, Wash.

Service for Richard B. Murbach, 89, will be at 1 p.m. today at Strate Funeral Home in Davenport. Burial will be at Mountain View Cemetery in Davenport.

Mr. Murbach, who was born north of Wilbur, died Friday.

He graduated from Almira High School and later was a farmer and a mechanic.

He was a member of the Mondovi Grange.

He is survived by his wife, Louise; two brothers, Lynn Murbach of Bayview, Idaho, and Lawrence Murbach of Seattle; and five sisters, Mildred Hall of Davenport, Lois Morris of Orofino, Idaho, Helen Reinbold of Davenport, Mary Lou Fisk of Walla Walla and Neva Ralph of Spokane.
