Brig. Gen. Merritt Johnson Spokane
Graveside service for retired Brig. General Merritt A. Johnson is planned for 2 p.m. today at Riverside Memorial Park. Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Cheney United Church of Christ. Ball and Dodd Funeral HomeSouth is in charge of arrangements.
Gen. Johnson, who was born in Spokane, died Sunday. He was 75.
He was a graduate of Lewis and Clark High School and Gonzaga University School of Law.
He entered the Washington National Guard in 1938 while still in high school and began active duty in 1940. At age 19, he was the youngest master sergeant in the Army, and was sent to Pearl Harbor the day before it was attacked. He was later commissioned as an officer and rose to the rank of brigadier general. He commanded the National Guard’s 81st Infantry Brigade from 1970 to 1974, when he retired. Gen. Johnson received the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Meritorious Service Medal and the Combat Infantryman’s Badge. He was also inducted into the Infantry Officer Candidate School Hall of Fame.
Gen. Johnson served as city attorney for Medical Lake, Cheney and Airway Heights for nearly 20 years and retired in 1981.
He was a professor of business law at Eastern Washington University for 23 years and retired in 1976.
His first wife, Woody Johnson, died in 1980.
He is survived by his wife of 14 years, Enola Johnson; two daughters, Pam Wells of Olympia and Jenny Brownlee of Spokane; a stepson, Phil Warnock of Federal Way, Wash.; two brothers, Lyman Johnson of Cheney and Thomas Johnson of Morongo Valley, Calif.; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Kidney Foundation or the American Cancer Society.
Larry Byrum Oaksdale, Wash.
Graveside service for Larry Byrum, 47, will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Oaksdale Cemetery. Kramer Funeral Home in Tekoa, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Byrum, who was born in Spokane, died Tuesday.
He graduated from Oaksdale High School and served in the Navy during the Vietnam War. He attended Eastern Washington University and Western Washington University, where he earned a degree in bookkeeping.
He worked for the Oaksdale Grain Growers, and Gardner and Smith in Tekoa. In 1981, he moved to Oak Harbor, Wash., returning to Tekoa in 1989.
He had also worked as a bookkeeper for Colfax (Wash.) Grange Supply until 1992.
Mr. Byrum was a member of the Oaksdale First Baptist Church.
Survivors include three brothers, Don, Dennis and Ed Byrum all of Tekoa; and two sisters, Sharon Siders of El Dorado, Ark., and Barbara Byrum of Spokane.

Maj. Dorothy McLellan Walla Walla
Visitation for retired Major Dorothy Lucille McLellan, is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. today at Smith Funeral Home in Grandview, Wash. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. today at the Grandview Cemetery.
Maj. McLellan, who was born in Grandview, died Sunday. She was 82.
She graduated from Washington State University with a degree in business administration.
In 1942 she joined the Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps, which later became the Women’s Army Corps. She served in the Army Service Forces Mobilization Division with the 7th Army in Heidelberg, Germany, in Headquarters National Security Agency and the Fifth Army Headquarters. She retired from the Army in the early 1960s.
She lived in Germany for more than 14 years before moving to Tacoma. She moved to Spokane from Tacoma and spent 15 years in Spokane before moving to Walla Walla in 1995.
Survivors included two nephews and six nieces.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Women’s Memorial or the Arthritis Foundation in care of the funeral home.
Hazel Stonebraker Spokane
Service for Hazel Berneice Stonebraker, 91, will be at 11 a.m. today at the Zion Lutheran Church in Deer Park. Burial will be at Pinecrest Cemetery in Sandpoint. Lauer Funeral Home in Deer Park is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Stonebraker, who was born in Bozeman, Mont., died Monday.
She graduated from Sandpoint High School and Kinman Business College in Spokane.
She worked as a bookkeeper for the Sanpoil Lumber Company in Dover, Idaho, and also for her family’s businesses.
She also served as the secretary for the Hillyard Senior Center for many years.
Her husband, George Stonebraker, died in 1973.
Survivors include three daughters, Betty Janke of Deer Park, and Patricia Carlock and Wanda Perry, both of Spokane; six grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Kidney Foundation.
Herman Adkins Greenacres
Memorial service for Herman M. Adkins, 85, will be at 11 a.m. today at the Opportunity Christian Church. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Adkins, who was born in Hayden Lake, Idaho, died Tuesday.
He lived in the Spokane area for 67 years and worked as a carpenter.
Mr. Adkins was a member of the Carpenter’s Union Local No. 98, the Odd Fellows Lodge and the Opportunity Christian Church.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Arlene; four daughters, Carol Johnson of Greenacres, Rosalie Hand of Spokane, Judy Haley of Yuba City, Calif., and Jane Naccarato of Kennewick; a son, Virgil Adkins of Newport, Wash.; 16 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Edwin Hood Cheney
Memorial service for Edwin L. Hood, 69, will be at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the Cheney Funeral Chapel.
Mr. Hood, who was born in Sand Springs, Okla., died Tuesday.
He served in the Army during World War II.
In 1972 he moved to Cheney from Spokane, and was the owner of Ed’s Appliance shop. He retired in 1996.
Survivors include a son, Edwin Hood Jr. of Federal Way, Wash.; a daughter, Connie Kessler of Linn Creek, Mo.; his mother, Leona Hood of Yuma, Ariz.; a brother, Raymond Hood of Hillsboro, Ore.; a sister, Christine Wolfkill of Renton, Wash.; and six grandchildren.
Clifford Lund Lind, Wash.
Service for Clifford J. Lund, 56, will be at 11 a.m. today at the Lind United Methodist Church. Vault interment will be at the Lind Cemetery. Danekas Funeral Home in Ritzville, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Lund, who was born in Portland, died Tuesday.
He was a farmer and rancher in Lind where he had lived for the past 28 years.
Mr. Lund was a member of the White Trail Grange, the Adams County Cattleman’s Association and the Ritzville Rodeo Association.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Sherry; two sons, Eric and Todd Lund, both of Spokane; and his mother, Myrtle Lund of Moses Lake.

Walter Wiklund Spokane
Service for Walter W. Wiklund, 79, will be at 10 a.m. today Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Graveside service will be at 1 p.m Saturday at Cyprus Lawn Memorial Park in Everett.
Mr. Wiklund, who was born in Everett, died Wednesday.
He was a 33-year Spokane resident, and worked for the Great Northern Railway and Burlington Northern Railroad for 40 years. He retired in 1977 as a bridge and building supervisor.
He served with the Navy Seabees during World War II and was a member of the Eagles and Masonic Lodges.
Mr. Wiklund is survived by two sons, Wally and Ronald Wiklund; a brother, Stanley Wiklund; a sister, Jo Dustin; and two grandchildren.
Clara Brudie Priest River, Idaho
Service for Clara M. Brudie, 93, will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Priest River Congregational Church. Burial will follow at the Evergreen Cemetery in Priest River. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Priest River is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Brudie, who was born in Coleharbor, N.D., died Monday while visiting her son in Clark Fork, Idaho.
In 1925, she married Martin Brudie in Minot, N.D., and in 1928 they moved to Bonner County.
She worked as a postal clerk for the Priest River post office for more than 25 years and retired in 1968.
Mrs. Brudie was a member of the Priest River Community Congregational Church, the Order of the Eastern Star and the Priest River Library Club.
Her husband died in 1977.
Survivors include a son, Donald Brudie of Clark Fork; two sisters, Madeline Vought of Garrison, N.D., and Delores Rodahl of Stockbridge, Ga.; two grandchildren and twin great-grandsons.

Virginia Davidson Spokane
No service will be held for Virginia (Tyson) Davidson at her request. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Davidson, who died Tuesday, was born in Sterling, Colo. She was 73.
She was 27-year Spokane resident and worked as a bookkeeper for several businesses, including Global Travel.
Her husband of 37 years, Danny Davidson, died in 1986.
Survivors include two sisters, Elizabeth Oppie of Yuma, Ariz., and Patricia Gugelman of Sidney, Neb.
