Hints From Heloise

Dear Heloise: A few summers ago when I had to store a lug of fresh peaches in the crisper drawer of my refrigerator, I laid the paper pad that had been packed in the box over the fruit. The peaches lasted longer than expected, and we did not lose any.

After learning how the pad had helped, I now ask the produce man at my grocery store or vegetable market to save me the pads that come in boxes of fruit.

I keep several on hand to cover fruits and vegetables, alternating when one becomes damp, drying it out, and using it again until it gets old or torn.
