Huskies Advance In Softball
Women’s World Series
Leah Francis had a two-run single in the fourth inning to help Washington to a 5-1 victory over Iowa Friday at the Women’s College World Series.
The Huskies (50-17) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Becky Newbry. Iowa (52-8) tied it in the third when Lyn Nance singled to drive in Christy Hebert, who had tripled.
Washington made it 2-1 on an RBI single by Sara Pickering in the bottom of the third. The Huskies’ final run came on a bases-loaded walk by Leanne Rosser in the sixth.
Jamie Graves (20-5) got the victory.
Washington plays again Sunday afternoon against the survivor of two games today between UCLA (1-1 in the World Series), Michigan (0-1) and South Carolina (0-1).
Also Friday, Katie Swan’s opposite-field double in the 14th inning gave top-seeded Arizona (59-4) a 2-0 victory over UCLA (46-13).
Arizona and Washington are the two remaining undefeated teams.
Arizona’s opponent on Sunday will be the survivor of the portion of the bracket involving Massachusetts (0-1 in the World Series), Fresno State (0-1) and Iowa (1-1).
