Young Slams Pirates To Win
National League
Kevin Young’s first career grand slam highlighted a five-run eighth inning that lifted visiting Pittsburgh to an 8-6 victory over Montreal on Sunday.
With the Pirates trailing 4-3, Adrian Brown led off the eighth with an infield single off Omar Daal (1-1), went to second on a groundout and took third on a wild pitch. Mark Johnson walked and Lee Smith relieved.
Joe Randa’s RBI single tied the game 4-4, and Jason Kendall was hit by a pitch. Young then hit Smith’s first pitch over the wall in center for an 8-4 lead.
The Expos made it 8-6 in the eighth on an RBI double by Doug Strange and a run-scoring single by Chris Widger.
Marc Wilkins (4-0) pitched one inning for the win. Rich Loiselle pitched a perfect ninth for his fourth save.
Mike Lansing hit two homers for Montreal, including a seventh-inning shot off Wilkins that put the Expos ahead 4-3. He also homered off Pirates starter Esteban Loaiza in the third inning to give the Expos a 2-0 lead.
Cardinals 9, Giants 3 San Francisco
Todd Stottlemyre earned his 100th career victory, striking out eight in seven strong innings.
Stottlemyre (3-3) is 100-91 in 10 seasons with Toronto, Oakland and St. Louis. He allowed three runs and six hits, and struck out the side in the second and third innings.
Willie McGee, Ray Lankford, Royce Clayton and Delino DeShields each drove in two runs for the Cardinals, who were successful on all six of their steal attempts.
Dodgers 2, Braves 0 Los Angeles
Ismael Valdes allowed just three hits in seven innings and Billy Ashley’s RBI single in the seventh broke a scoreless tie as Los Angeles beat Denny Neagle and Atlanta.
Neagle (7-1) was bidding to become the fourth pitcher in Braves history to start a season with eight straight wins.
Eric Karros drew a walk to start the seventh and took third on Todd Zeile’s hit-and-run single to right field. Ashley then singled to left to drive in Karros.
Rockies 8, Astros 5 Denver
Ellis Burks had three hits, including a home run, and Walt Weiss chipped in with his first homer as Colorado overcame an early 4-0 deficit.
Roger Bailey (5-4) survived a shaky start and ended a three-game personal losing streak. Mike Munoz retired pinch-hitter Pat Listach with the bases loaded in the ninth for his first save.
Bailey, who hadn’t won since May 4 and had a 5.44 ERA in his last three starts, worked eight innings and allowed five runs, four earned, and nine hits. Burks, Weiss and Andres Galarraga drove in two runs each and Dante Bichette also had three hits.
Marlins 6, Padres 2 San Diego
Bobby Bonilla drove in three runs, including two on just his second homer of the season, and Kevin Brown beat San Diego for the second time in six starts.
Bonilla hit a two-run homer to right field on the first pitch he saw from Pete Smith with two outs in the eighth inning. Edgar Renteria was aboard on a leadoff single that extended his hitting streak to 10 games.
Reds 7, Cubs 5 Cincinnati
Bret Boone’s sacrifice fly snapped a tie and highlighted a four-run fifth inning for Cincinnati.
The Cubs hit three homers off Pete Schourek (3-4), including back-to-back shots by Scott Servais and Jose Hernandez in the fourth, for a 4-2 lead. The Reds put together six singles - two of them infield hits off the glove of reliever Kent Bottenfield (1-1) - for the go-ahead rally.
The Cubs put runners on second and third with one out in the ninth, but Jeff Shaw got the final two outs.

Philadelphia The game between New York and Philadelphia was postponed by rain and will be made up in September.

San Francisco’s Marcus Jensen hit his first big league homer in the second inning in his 62nd at-bat. … San Diego’s Wally Joyner fouled a ball off his right knee and could be out 3-4 days. … Larry Walker extended his hitting streak to 13 games for Colorado. … The Reds have hit the most batters in the majors - 29 in 47 games.
