Obituaries

Gerald Dean Hayden Lake, Idaho

Visitation for Gerald Kay Dean, 51, will be held Monday from 5-8 p.m. at Yates Funeral Home, Hayden Chapel. Service will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Yates Hayden Chapel. A reception will follow at the Yates Hayden Chapel Gathering Center. Burial will take place at Coeur d’Alene Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Dean, who died Monday, was born in Filer, Idaho.

He graduated from Filer High School in 1964 and attended the College of Southern Idaho before serving with the Air Force.

Mr. Dean worked for the state of Idaho after his military service.

He moved to the Coeur d’Alene area in 1977 and was recently an investigator for the Department of Transportation’s motor vehicle investigation division.

He was a member of the United Church of God and was also a beekeeper.

Survivors include two sons, P.J. Dean of Utah and Mike Dean of Georgia; a brother, Eddie Dean of Nevada; three sisters, Margaret Goldston of Meridian, Idaho, Jessie Biggerstaff of Twin Falls, Idaho, and Marti Palacios of Nevada; and a grandson, Cody.

Craig Jensen St. Maries

Mass of Christian Burial for Craig James Jensen, 43, will be Monday at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in St. Maries. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in St. Maries. Yates-Hodge Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Jensen, who was born in Coeur d’Alene, died Tuesday from injuries suffered in a logging accident near Carlin Bay on Lake Coeur d’Alene.

He graduated from St. Maries High School in 1972 and went to work for Bob Russell Logging and the Potlatch Corp.

Mr. Jensen worked for St. Maries Logging Co., for 20 years before starting Jensen Logging in 1993.

In 1976 he married Debbie Moe in Coeur d’Alene. He was divorced in 1996.

Mr. Jensen was a member of the Associated Loggers Association and the St. Maries Elks Lodge.

He is survived by include two sons, Harley Jensen of Japan and Dylan Jensen of St. Maries; his father and stepmother, Jim and Mickey Jensen of St. Maries; his mother and stepfather, Joann and Dr. Barney Rapp of St. Maries; a brother, Michael Jensen and a sister, Vicki Karber, both of St. Maries; and his grandmother, Esther Jensen of St. Maries.

Lynn ‘Sam’ Richards Coeur d’Alene

Visitation for Lynn ‘Sam’ Richards, 82, is scheduled for Monday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene. Graveside service will follow at 2 p.m. at Forest Cemetery in Coeur d’Alene. Mr. Richards, who was born in Iowa, died Wednesday.

He attended school in Iowa and served in the Navy from 1934 until 1940.

He later became a police officer in California before serving with the Navy again during World War II.

Mr. Richards served with the Long Beach Police Department for 25 years. He retired in 1967 and moved to Coeur d’Alene.

Survivors include his wife, Arlene; a son, Jim Richards of Rathdrum; a daughter, Janelle Whaley of Coeur d’Alene; four grandchildren, Jaime, Le Anne, Seth and Travis; and one great-grandchild.

Etha Merriam Post Falls

Memorial service for Etha Mildred Merriam, 92, will be Monday at 10 a.m. at English Funeral Chapel in Post Falls. Mrs. Merriam, who was born in South Dakota, died Wednesday.

She moved to Post Falls in 1942 before moving to Spokane in 1948.

She returned to Post Falls in 1994 and was a member of the Rebekah Lodge.

Her husband, Theodor, died in 1947.

Survivors include a son, Leslie Merriam of Post Falls; a daughter, Virginia Hart of Post Falls; three sisters, Ethel Sherman of South Dakota, and Irma Olson and Ines Ziegler, both of Spokane; three grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

James Cozine Spokane

Memorial service for James Ellis Cozine, 85, will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Cremation Society of Washington.

Mr. Cozine, who was born in Lind, Wash., died Wednesday.

He graduated from Lind High School and served in the Navy during World War II and the Korean War.

He worked for the Northern Pacific Railroad for more than 20 years and was a member of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees.

His wife of 30 years, Katherine, preceded him in death.

Mr. Cozine is survived by a sister, Isabelle Eckelberry of Post Falls; and two brothers, Eldon Cozine of Post Falls and Gerald Cozine of Spokane.

Carol Houser Plummer, Idaho

Memorial service for Carol J. Houser, 48, will be at 2:30 p.m. today at Chief’s Chapel in Plummer. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ms. Houser, who was born in Spokane, died Tuesday.

She was a 25-year Plummer resident and worked as a data-entry clerk.

Survivors include her father, Eugene Loe of Plummer; her mother, Mary Kidder of Plummer; two sons, Rick Pentland of Spokane and Tony Pentland of La Mesa, Calif.; three brothers, Ronald Loe of Plummer, Kenneth Loe of Kamiah, Idaho, and David Carlson of Pullman; a sister, Connie Pentland of Mountain Home, Idaho; and three grandsons.

James Monahan Spokane

Funeral Mass for James A. Monahan, 81, will be at 10 a.m. today at Assumption Catholic Church. Private burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Monahan, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Wednesday.

He worked as a carpenter foreman for C.A. Myers for 24 years and built many homes in northwest Spokane.

He was a member of Carpenters Union Local No. 98.

Survivors include his wife, Grace “Gladys” Monahan; a son, Patrick Monahan of New London, Conn.; a daughter, Donna Canter of Colbert; a brother, Francis Monahan of Omak, Wash.; and seven grandchildren.

William Clardy Spokane

Visitation for William G. “Bill” Clardy is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home. Service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mr. Clardy, who was born in Anderson County, S.C., died Wednesday. He was 77.

He served in the Army during World War II in the Pacific Theater, and in 1945 he married Frieda Naasz in Yakima.

Mr. Clardy worked for Kaiser Aluminum in Trentwood for 30 years and retired in 1982.

He was a 45-year Spokane resident and was a member of Opportunity Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Frieda; two sons, Willis Clardy of Williamston, S.C., and Rick Clardy of Cleveland, Texas; two daughters, Linda Gross of Elk, and Carol Wiedrich of Inchelium, Wash.; five brothers, Ray Clardy of Spokane, Frank Clardy of Michigan, Randy Clardy of Warner Robins, Ga., David Clardy of Belton, S.C., and Jerry Clardy of Anderson, S.C.; two sisters, Joan Scott of Greenwood, S.C., and Judy Williams of Warner Robins; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren;

Mary Graham Spokane

No service will be held for Mary B. Graham, 90, at her request. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Graham, who was born in Crookston, Minn., died Monday.

She was a homemaker and had lived in Spokane for 87 years.

Mrs. Graham was a member of the Nu Chapter of Delta Gamma at the University of Idaho and St. Monica’s Guild.

Her husband, John, died in 1973.

She is survived by a son, J. Graham of Alexandria, Va.; a daughter, Judith Berryman of Auburn, Wash.; two sisters, Vivian and Irene Harvey, both of Spokane; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Roy Pearson, M.D. Spokane

Memorial service for Dr. Roy T. Pearson, 76, will be at 11 a.m. today at Plymouth Congregational Church. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Dr. Pearson, who was born in Forest Lake, Minn., died Wednesday.

He graduated from the University of Minnesota Medical School and served in the Navy during World War II.

In 1952 he moved to Spokane to practice medicine. He retired in 1978.

He later served as a doctor on the hospital ship Hope at St. Lucia Island and for Lutheran Services and the House of Charity.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth; three sons, James Pearson of Spokane, Dr. Michael Pearson of Gig Harbor, Wash., and Mark Pearson of Seattle; two brothers, Dr. Bror Pearson of Rock Falls, Ill., and Ivar Pearson of Boulder, Colo.; three sisters, Ann Hustrulid of Salem, Ore., Signe Solberg of Minneapolis and Mary Alford of Cincinnati; and seven grandchildren

Clarence Hoffman Inchelium, Wash.

Graveside service for Clarence Levi Hoffman, 63, will be at 10 a.m today at the Hall Creek Cemetery in Inchelium. Danekas Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hoffman, who was born in Inchelium, died Tuesday.

He attended schools in Inchelium through the 10th grade and worked on the family farm.

In 1956 he married Donna Smith in Coeur d’Alene and they made their home near Inchelium.

He worked for Boise Cascade Corp., in its logging operations for 10 years and later worked for the Ferry County Road Department for eight years. He had also been a self-employed rancher and logger.

Mr. Hoffman was a member of the Ferry County Cattlemen’s Association, the Lakeside Grange and the Tribal Truckers Association.

He survived by his wife, Donna; a daughter, Helen Hoffman of Inchelium; seven sons, Donald Hoffman of Republic, Wash., and Charlie, Monty, Mark, Fred, Gary and Bill Hoffman, all of Inchelium; a brother, Bud Hoffman of Inchelium; six sisters, Nellie Fry and Marie Banning, both of Inchelium, Jean Whipple of Spokane, Donna McClung, Margaret Hamley and Dorrie Hoffman, all of Colville, Wash.; and 23 grandchildren.

Estella Olsen Spokane

Graveside service for Estella J. Olsen, 95, will be at 10 a.m. today at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. today at Heritage Congregational Church. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Olsen died Wednesday.

She was a lifetime Spokane resident and graduated from North Central High School.

She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Olsen was a member of Heritage Congregational Church, the Spokane Garden Club, the Shakespearean Club, the Delphinium Club, Spokane Woman’s Club, Amaranth Club, Order of the Eastern Star’s Delphi Chapter, Spokane Central Lady Lions, Spokane Women’s Dental Auxiliary, the Knife and Fork Club and Elks Lodge No. 228.

Her husband of 76 years, Dr. Charles Olsen, died in March.

She survived by a son, William Olsen of Beaverton, Ore.; a daughter, Jean Toland of Concord, Calif.; a brother, Jim Palmer of Seattle; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Ronald Rodrigues Spokane

Visitation for Ronald L. Rodrigues, 54, will be from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral HomeSouth. Service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Cremation will follow.

Mr. Rodrigues, who was born in Makawao, Hawaii, died Wednesday.

He was a 20-year Spokane resident and worked as a hairdresser and owned Hair Design in Coeur d’Alene for 15 years.

He later worked as an assemblyman for Boeing in Spokane.

Mr. Rodrigues is survived by his wife of 35 years, Shirley; a daughter, Rhonda Clark of Spokane; a son, Reade Rodrigues of Otis Orchards; two brothers, Leroy Rodrigues of California and Abraham Rodrigues of Morgan Hill, Calif.; his mother, Florene Rodrigues, and his grandmother, Olivia Morreira, both of San Jose, Calif.; and three granddaughters.

Marilyn Ostberg Spokane

Graveside service for Marilyn Jean Ostberg, 47, will be at 2 p.m. today at Riverside Memorial Park. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Ostberg died Wednesday.

She was a lifetime Spokane resident and worked as a waitress at a local restaurant.

Mrs. Ostberg is survived by her husband of 25 years, Brian; a son, Jason Ostberg of Spokane; two daughters, Barb Chestnutt of Medical Lake and Stacey Strong of Spokane; a brother, Michael Ellsworth of Spokane; and three grandchildren.

Bessie Carlson Spokane

Graveside service for Bessie E. Carlson, 85, was Friday at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mrs. Carlson, who died Tuesday, was born Anselmo, Neb.

She worked as a housekeeper for Deaconess Hospital from 1956 until she retired in 1968.

She had lived in Spokane for 63 years.

Her husband of 21 years, Axel Carlson, died in 1960.

Mrs. Carlson is survived by a son, Keith Carlson of Spokane; two daughters, Delores Nelson of Spokane and Shirley Spillman of Everett; 13 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

Glen ‘Bill’ Chase Spokane

Memorial service for Glen W. “Bill” Chase, 79, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South.

Mr. Chase, who was born in Spokane, died Tuesday.

He graduated from Lewis and Clark High School and Washington State University.

Mr. Chase served in the Army during World War II and later worked as a salesman for sporting goods manufacturers selling to wholesalers and retailers. He retired in 1983.

He was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity at Washington State University and the Manito Country Club.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Jean; two daughters, Julie Middaughof Chattaroy and Sue Welch of Redmond, Wash.; four grandchildren and one great-grandson.
