Armed Man Holding Hostage Near WSU

A police SWAT team surrounded a private apartment near the Washington State University campus where an armed man was holding a woman hostage Monday night, police said.

Police were trying to negotiate a peaceful end to the standoff, which began about 8:30 p.m., the police department said.

The man was armed with a handgun.

The incident apparently was a domestic dispute, police said.

No further information was released.
