Hints From Heloise
Dear Heloise: Please reprint the “recipe” for spot remover you gave in your column some time ago. I made it, and it’s great, particularly for grease spots on clothing. But I lost the recipe. It called for ammonia, dishwashing liquid and something more. Help! Patsy Vaughn, Montgomery, Ala.
This is a recipe for a homemade, low-cost prewash spray, and here’s how to make it.
All you need to do is combine equal parts of full-strength household ammonia, dishwashing liquid (one that does not contain bleach) and water.
Example, 1/3 cup of each equals 1 cup magic spray.
Put the mixture in a handy spray-type bottle. Be absolutely sure to label the bottle with a permanent marker and include a caution that it contains ammonia. You don’t want to accidentally use it with bleach or anything that contains bleach, which can create potentially toxic fumes.
Don’t let it “set” on the clothing when using to treat stains; you must wash the clothes right away. - Heloise
