Mike McLaughlin edged rookie Steve Park to win the pole for NASCAR’s Jiffy Lube 300 Busch Series race in Homestead, Fla.

McLaughlin toured the revamped, 1.5-mile Metro-Dade Homestead Motorsports Complex in his Chevrolet at 147.771 mph. His one-lap run broke the year-old record of 139.074, set by Bobby Labonte before the track was reconfigured.

In Imola, Italy, charges could be dropped for four men accused of manslaughter in the death of three-time Formula One champion Ayrton Senna. The prosecutor in the nine-month-old trial moved to dismiss charges against race car owner Frank Williams and three officials of San Marino Grand Prix, at which the driver was killed in 1994.
