Irwin, Morgan Romp
Hale Irwin and Gil Morgan, 1-2 on the Senior PGA Tour all season, have turned the Tour Championship into their personal shootout.
Morgan’s second straight 66 put him at 15-under and two strokes in front of Irwin, who fired a 68 at the Dunes Golf & Beach Club in Myrtle Beach, S.C. No one else was within five shots of the two.
At Braselton, Ga., Mark Calcavecchia overcame a shaky start and a mild challenge by Lee Westwood to shoot a 1-under-par 71 for a six-stroke lead after three rounds of the Sarazen World Open.
Tiger Woods and Japan’s Shigeki Maruyama played the 534-yard, par-5 18th hole seven consecutive times, with Maruyama finally taking the last $200,000 at stake in the $600,000 skins competition in Hanno, Japan.
Woods finished last in the four-man event with $110,000. Mark O’Meara earned $170,000, and Nick Price took home $120,000.
At Kapalua, Hawaii, Davis Love III, who has 12 career victories on his resume, and David Toms, who won his first tournament a little over three months ago, birdied the final hole to continue to share the lead after three rounds with 200 totals.
Former Pullman resident Kirk Triplett is at 206.
