In 1889: Reporter Nellie Bly (Elizabeth Cochrane) was inspired by author Jules Verne to travel around the world in less than 80 days. She succeeded, making the trip in 72 days.

In 1851: Herman Melville’s novel “Moby Dick” was first published in the United States.

In 1881: Charles J. Guiteau went on trail for assassinating President Garfield. Guiteau was convicted and huanged the following year.

In 1972: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed above 1,000 for the first time, ending the day at 1,003.16.
