Dear Heloise: I am a 13-year-old girl who reads your hints every day. I have a hint that I learned from experience. When you purchase a car battery or other things that have acid in them, be sure that they are in an upright position and secured at all times.

Recently my mother and I bought a battery and set it on the floor of the back seat of our car. The battery turned over and acid leaked out. The acid ate the carpet on the floor so badly that the whole thing had to be replaced. - Emily South, Town Creek, Ala.

Caution should always be used, as battery acid can cause nasty burns to the skin, too. Thanks for sending in this good point to remember. - Heloise
