Iditarod Founder Ails

Compiled From Wire Services

Octogenarian Joe Redington Sr. was discharged Wednesday from a local hospital where officials say he has been diagnosed with cancer of the esophagus.

Redington founded the 1,000-mile Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race and was named most inspirational musher last year after completing the 25th annual event.

Redington begins a series of cancer treatments next week, Providence Hospital said. The esophagus is the tube through which food passes from the mouth to the stomach.
