Hints From Heloise

King Features Syndicate

Dear Heloise: We receive many calls at our humane society’s shelter for lost animals. It is so sad, pet owners losing their dogs and cats while traveling and even leaving them behind at rest areas. We have found many of these animals and, at the owners’ requests, have shipped them back home.

Pets traveling in pet carriers is certainly the smart way, with the owner’s name on the collar and carrier. I would also suggest to pet owners, if possible, to put the seat belt around the carrier, as it saves the pet from being thrown out on impact. We have had reports where carrier was thrown some distance from the car and in the confusion both the carrier and pet were lost, perish the thought. Margaret Smith, Lake City, Fla.

All good bits of advice for pet lovers who may be traveling with their animal friends. Thanks.- Heloise
