Szewczenko Prevails
Tanja Szewczenko, who endured a 19-month absence from figure skating because of injury and a debilitating viral illness, won the women’s title at the NHK Trophy and moved atop the world rankings.
The former German champion had a shaky moment landing on her first triple lutz. But after that, she perfectly executed four other triple lutzes. Szewczenko earned 12 points, giving her 24 overall and the lead in the championship rankings.
Maria Butyrskaya of Russia, who led Friday’s short program, finished second. China’s Chen Lu, the Lillehammer Olympics bronze medalist, finished third.
Butyrskaya earned nine points for the runner-up finish, giving her 18 and tying her for third with American Tara Lipinski in the rankings. Russia’s Irina Slutskaya, who skipped the competition, is second with 21 points.
The men’s final is today.
