Lc Moves Up With Victory
Greater Spokane League volleyball remained status quo Tuesday except for Lewis and Clark moving up a notch.
Gretchen Haight had six kills in the third game - including the last two points - as LC (7-3) scored a 15-8, 15-7, 15-6 win over visiting Central Valley (4-6) to tie Shadle Park for third place.
CV cut LC’s 10-5, first-game lead to 10-8 before the Tigers pulled away.
Rikki Jackson’s two kills in the second game cut LC’s lead from 6-2 to 7-6, but the Tigers scored four straight after 15 sideouts and a Bears error.
LC’s next opponent, first-place Mead, assisted the Tigers’ step up by toppling visiting Shadle 15-9, 15-9, 12-15, 15-10. Mindy Wallis totaled 15 kills and 28 assists for the Panthers (10-0).
Julie Weatherred’s four digs and four blocks helped second-place Ferris (9-1) to a 15-5, 15-0, 16-14 win at North Central (1-9). NC’s Amber Carter and Alice Stearns totaled seven digs apiece.
At Mt. Spokane (0-10), Angel Fairbanks’ nine kills, three aces and three blocks guided Rogers (6-4) to a 15-7, 15-0, 15-2 win. The Pirates served five straight for a 12-5 lead in the opener, then served to a 9-0, third-game lead.
University (2-7) didn’t report its home match with Gonzaga Prep (3-6).
Halee Haptonstall served 26 for 26 to lead visiting Newport (7-0) to a 15-2, 15-1, 15-8 Great Northern League win over Riverside (0-6) at Chattaroy. Newport’s Carey Sauer added 13 digs and eight kills.
Marathon matches were the norm at other sites, with Colville, Lakeside and Deer Park hanging tough.
At Medical Lake, Melissa Wollan’s 13 kills and five aces led Colville (6-0) to a 7-15, 15-10, 15-7, 11-15, 15-4 win over the Cardinals (2-4). ML’s Amanda Monroe had seven kills, three aces and 15 digs.
At Nine Mile Falls, in the fifth game, Tianna Naccarato served 10 consecutive points and Megan Broughton added six digs and four kills to guide Lakeside (3-3) over visiting Pullman (2-4) 15-11, 15-7, 2-15, 13-15, 15-2.
At Deer Park, Gina Bendowsky’s 13 kills and five aces led the Stags (3-4) to a 15-11, 8-15, 15-10, 11-15, 15-3 decision over visiting Chewelah (2-4). Becca Magart added 30 assists and Brianna Hall nine digs for DP.
Wilbur-Creston notched a 15-11, 6-15, 15-5 Bi-County League win at Davenport. Both teams are 3-1.
Girls soccer
Larissa Mueller scored three times, giving her seven goals in the last two matches, as Riverside (5-0-0) defeated visiting Pullman 4-0 to break a first-place tie in the GNL.
Mueller, with 11 goals, jumped ahead of teammate Tracy Koesel (10) for the GNL lead. Brooke Dornquast scored her seventh for the Rams, who have outscored league rivals 47-0. The Greyhounds (4-1-0) hadn’t allowed a goal in GNL matches.
At Medical Lake, Javana Howard scored twice during a three-goal spree that the Cardinals (2-1-2) used to defeat visiting Lakeside 4-3.
Howard has seven goals in GNL matches. The Eagles (1-4-1) pulled within one at 68 minutes when Sara Brundage, who replaced injured Erica Horne, was called for a hand to the ball and Ericka Oscarson nailed the penalty kick.
Colville (3-1-1) notched a 5-1 win at Chewelah (0-5-0).
Cross country
Individual winners Mike Witt and Nora Zaprzalka led the top-ranked Lakeside boys and fourth-ranked Riverside girls to team wins during a GNL-opening, three-way meet at Pullman.
Witt ran the 3 miles in 16 minutes, 54 seconds, nearly one-half minute ahead of Bill Warner, whose ninth-ranked Riverside team is 1-1 after defeating the host Greyhounds. Zaprzalka’s 21:51 topped Eryn Cook by 14 seconds. Lakeside’s girls (1-1) edged Pullman 28-31.
At Colville, Skyler Johnson and Crystal Evans of the host Indians won individual honors and led the fifth-ranked boys and unranked girls to wins.
Johnson completed the 3 miles in 16:55, 15 seconds up on Neil Small of last year’s State A champion Chewelah, which is 1-1 after defeating Newport. Evans’ 19:35 easily topped runner-up Sarah Bell (20:24), whose Newport team entered with a No. 5 ranking but couldn’t match Colville’s 1-3-5-7 finish. Newport defeated Chewelah.
